Mayor Sullivan has addressed the challenging issue of homelessness head-on. While he has arguably done more for the homeless community than any previous mayor, he has also focused on the public safety implications for ALL residents, including park and trail users. Learn more |

Deferred maintenance is a problem at both the state and local level. Mayor Sullivan has directed his capital budget program towards catching up on major repairs and upgrades to our public facilities, including our parks, trails, roads, rec centers and our major facilities such as the Loussac Library, the Sullivan Arena, the Egan Center, the Performing Arts Center, among others. Upon taking office, Mayor Sullivan immediately began contingency planning in case an energy shortfall causes a disruption in the delivery of natural gas. Working with the local utilities, gas producers, major consumers, and other government leaders, a comprehensive strategy has been developed that has significantly increases the level of preparedness in Southcentral Alaska. PORT EXPANSION PROJECT BACK ON THE RIGHT TRACKThe Port of Anchorage may be the most important piece of infrastructure in the state of Alaska. Almost 90 percent of merchandise goods enter the Port of Anchorage from Tacoma, Washington, serving approximately 85 percent of Alaska’s population. This includes more than 250 villages and rural towns across Alaska. In addition to the four million tons of goods annually transported in more than 240,000 containers, the Port provides 100 percent of the jet fuel used at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) and 65 percent of the jet fuel used at Ted Stevens International Airport. The Municipality faced serious budget challenges when Mayor Sullivan took office in July of 2009. Declining revenues due to the recession, combined with increasing expenses, foremost of which were the inappropriate labor contracts pushed through at the end of 2008, meant that decisive action had to be taken immediately. Mayor Sullivan believes that the key to economic development lies in having the government facilitate, not hinder the private sector. He also believes that the quality of life in Anchorage is key to attracting and retaining business. Businesses want to locate in cities that are clean, safe, financially stable, have a reasonable regulatory climate, and with good schools and other public facilities. Additionally, the availability of diverse recreation and entertainment options are also important factors. read more |
