Protecting our Assets

Deferred maintenance is a problem at both the state and local level.  Mayor Sullivan has directed his capital budget program towards catching up on major repairs and upgrades to our public facilities, including our parks, trails, roads, rec centers and our major facilities such as the Loussac Library, the Sullivan Arena, the Egan Center, the Performing Arts Center, among others.

Through the successful passage of local bond propositions and with the support from the Legislature and the Governor for the mayor's legislative packages, the municipality has been able to make significant progress towards renewing our critical public assets.

The mayor is committed to keeping local bond propositions at a level that will keep our debt service at a declining level.  He is also working closely with our state leaders to leverage the unique opportunity that exists today with high oil prices creating a budget surplus in the billions of dollars.

His top priority for this year’s legislature is $350 million in the form of a ports and harbor bond for the Port of Anchorage Intermodal Expansion Project.  Now that the Mayor has successfully got the expansion project back on track, getting fiscal certainty is essential.

Governor Parnell agrees with Mayor Sullivan about the importance of completing the port project and has included a major ports and harbor bond proposition in his budget proposal and early indications are that the legislature will concur.

Other major requests include $17 million for our project 80’s facilities, as well as over $100 million for local road improvements.
